Plant Bio

Chamaedorea seifrizii

Native to areas of Mexico and Central America (and having spread into parts of Southern Florida), this palm naturally grows underneath taller trees in the rainforest. This makes it more tolerant of lower light conditions than some of its relatives. Its botanical name, Chamaedorea seifrizii, comes from the Greek words chamai (ground) and dorea (gift), because the fruits are easily accessible from the ground. The species is named for William Seifriz, a professor of biology at the University of Pennsylvania.

Indoors, give Bamboo Palm as much light as it can get to keep it happiest. It will tolerate medium light levels. If you grow it outdoors, it prefers a site with afternoon shade. Water was the top half or so of the potting mix dries to the touch. Bamboo Palm isn’t particularly drought tolerant. It prefers average to above-average relative humidity levels.

Note: This plant may have some natural degree of toxicity and may cause discomfort or illness if ingested. Additionally, exposure to the sap of this plant may cause discomfort to individuals with a sensitivity to it upon contact. Grown for ornamental purposes and not intended for human or animal consumption.
